Do I need a SmartThings hub with google home?

Some products work with SmartThings, while some are with the Google Home hub. Usually, you don’t need two smart hubs at once, but if you want to bring more smart home devices, you might need to consider another compatible hub.

Google Home or Google assistant supports more devices than the Samsung SmartThings right now. So, when you are going to bring more devices, you might need Google Home as well; otherwise, there isn’t any need for two smart hubs at home.

I have reviewed so many products for Google Home and SmartThings ; I am linking a few ones here.

Google Home Guides:

Let’s discuss this topic more.

SmartThings Vs. Google Home

The difference between the SmartThings and Google Home is the manufacturer. Google Home is a product of Google, while SmartThings is of Samsung.

Google home was originally only a voice assistant; then, Google added features that it could control smart devices. Now, it also serves as an intelligent hub.

Both offer primary to advanced features, and there are a lot of compatible devices available for both.

Both devices support advanced home automation in which you can group more than one device and make custom automation. For example, when you sleep, all the lights will be turned off at night, and the security alarm will be on automatically.

In Google Home, it is called routine, and in SmartThings, it is Scene.

The key difference between the SmartThings and Google Home is the Zigbee connectivity. SmartThings use Z-Wave or Zigbee protocol while Google Home doesn’t—the technology lets the smart device communicate back with the mobile application. Learn more about Zigbee here .

More devices are compatible with the Zigbee and can work seamlessly with any Zigbee hub like the SmartThings.

Do I need Google Home with SmartThings hub?

Again, it is up to you.

If you need more smart home devices that are linked to the internet, then you might need both. But, if you are utilizing Google Home already and are happy with the compatible devices you have, you should stick with it.

Further, it is not a bad thing to have more than one smart hub at home. People also like to have Philips Hue smart hub along with Google Home, which is fine.

How to find compatible devices?

To find compatible devices with your favorite smart hub, you can check our guides here

Further, if you are searching for a device for SmartThings, check if there is written or printed “works with SmartThings.” You can also check its technology; if the device is saying it is Zigbee or Z-Wave, then it will work with SmartThings fine.

Further, if you haven’t found both, then you can search on the site or product page. For example, Amazon lets us search on the product page. Search for SmartThings there; people may already ask and get answered there.

Similarly, there will be written works with or compatible with Google Home on the compatible device page. Usually, a device that has the support of Google Assistant can work with Google Home.

Note: not every device that is compatible with SmartThings will be compatible with Google Home and vice versa.
